Strength & Motor Control Course

Onward Health's Strength & Motor Control Course is a structured, 6-session program rebuilding upper limb strength and movement quality following stroke, brain injury or spinal cord injury.

Once adequate range of motion is established, strengthening and motor control form the next stage of upper limb recovery including building the capacity and coordination needed for functional tasks. This course is best suited to clients who have adequate passive range of motion and are ready to build active strength and movement control.

Who we support

We commonly work with adults following:

  • Stroke (hemiparesis)

  • Acquired Brain Injury

  • Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury with upper limb involvement

This course is best suited to clients who have completed a foundational range of motion program, or who have adequate passive movement already. It is delivered one-on-one and tailored to the individual's presentation and environment.

The Strength & Motor Control Course may help with:

  • Reduced strength in the shoulder, elbow, wrist, or hand

  • Poor movement quality or coordination

  • Difficulty initiating or controlling arm movement

  • Reduced endurance for arm use during tasks

  • Compensatory movement patterns that limit function

What This Course Addresses

Assessment & Intervention Approach

Course Structure

The course runs over six sessions (45–60 minutes), delivered in person to allow for hands-on assessment and facilitation.

Session 1 — Assessment and goal setting. We measure baseline strength and movement quality and set goals tied to the functional tasks you're working towards.

Session 2 — Graded strengthening introduced at an appropriate load and intensity for your presentation.

Session 3 — Task-specific movement practice targeting the patterns underlying your functional goals.

Session 4 — Introduction of mirror therapy or constraint-based approaches where clinically appropriate.

Session 5 — Progression of strength and control tasks, increasing complexity and endurance.

Session 6 — Review and progression planning, re-measuring strength and confirming readiness to progress to the Fine Motor & Functional Grasp Course.

Functional Outcomes

The course aims to:

  • Improve strength through the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand

  • Improve movement quality and coordination

  • Reduce reliance on compensatory movement patterns

  • Build endurance for functional arm use

  • Prepare for fine motor and grasp-based training

Progress is measured at the start and end of the course using strength and goal-based outcome measures.

Cognitive rehabilitation services may be funded under:

  • NDIS

  • DVA

  • TAC / CTP schemes

  • Private referrals

We provide structured documentation aligned with funding requirements where required.
