Assistive Technology & Equipment Prescription
Assistive technology (AT) includes equipment and devices that support mobility, self-care, safety and independence. The right equipment can reduce physical strain, prevent injury, improve access and enhance quality of life. Assistive technology is also frequently used in the bathroom and go hand in hand with home modification.
Our role as Occupational Therapists is to assess functional needs, trial appropriate equipment, and provide clear clinical justification to ensure recommendations are both effective and compliant with funding guidelines. These equipment trials are commonly funded through the NDIS, DVA, CTP claim or WorkCover.

Our Assessment Process
Equipment prescription begins with a structured functional assessment, including:
Mobility and transfer ability
Strength and coordination
Postural alignment and pressure risk
Environmental access considerations
Safety and fatigue factors
Where needed, we also carry out a home safety assessment to see how a person moves around their home and which equipment will work safely there.
Where appropriate, we organise equipment trials to ensure suitability prior to final recommendation.
Reports include detailed clinical reasoning, risk analysis and cost justification where required by funding bodies.
