Memory Strategies Course

Onward Health's Memory Strategies Course is a structured, 6-session program supporting adults to build practical, personalised memory systems following neurological injury or illness.

Memory changes after brain injury or stroke can affect remembering appointments, medications, conversations or daily routines often leading to greater reliance on family or support workers. This course focuses on building an external memory system that genuinely fits the individual's life and habits, so independence can be rebuilt around a system they trust.

Who we support

We commonly work with adults following:

  • Stroke

  • Acquired Brain Injury

  • Traumatic Brain Injury

  • Neurological conditions

  • Post-concussion presentations

  • Cognitive decline impacting daily function

This course is delivered one-on-one and tailored to the individual's presentation, goals and environment.

The Attention & Focus Course may help with:

  • Difficulty remembering appointments, medications, or tasks

  • Reliance on others to "remember for them"

  • Difficulty recalling recent conversations or information

  • Forgetting steps partway through familiar routines

  • Reduced confidence in independent daily planning

What This Course Addresses

Assessment & Intervention Approach

The course runs over six sessions (45–60 minutes), delivered in person or via telehealth.

Session 1 — Assessment and goal setting. We measure baseline memory performance and set one to three goals tied to real tasks that matter to you.

Session 2 — External memory aids, matched to your technology comfort and pre-injury habits such as calendars, reminders and notebooks.

Session 3 — Prospective memory strategies, remembering to remember, including cueing and habit-anchoring techniques.

Session 4 — Errorless learning and routine building, consolidating habits and where relevant, relearning procedural tasks.

Session 5 — Real-world application, applying your chosen system to a live task such as medications, appointments or household routines.

Session 6 — Review and maintenance planning, with outcome re-assessment and a written strategy summary to keep.
