Information Processing Course

Onward Health's Information Processing Course is a structured, 6-session program supporting adults to manage slowed processing speed and keep pace with conversations, instructions and busy environments following neurological injury or illness.

Slowed processing is a common but often misunderstood change after brain injury or stroke. It's not a loss of intelligence or understanding, it's the time needed to take in, make sense of and respond to information. Left unaddressed, it can lead to feeling overwhelmed, avoiding social situations or relying heavily on others. This course targets processing speed directly, with strategies applied to real conversations and tasks.

Who we support

We commonly work with adults following:

  • Stroke

  • Acquired Brain Injury

  • Traumatic Brain Injury

  • Neurological conditions

  • Post-concussion presentations

  • Cognitive decline impacting daily function

This course is delivered one-on-one and tailored to the individual's presentation, goals and environment.

The Information Processing Course may help with:

  • Difficulty keeping pace with conversations or meetings

  • Feeling overwhelmed following multi-step instructions

  • Needing extra time to respond or make decisions

  • Avoidance of fast-paced or busy environments

  • Reliance on others to "translate" or slow things down

What This Course Addresses

Assessment & Intervention Approach

The course runs over six sessions (45–60 minutes), delivered in person or via telehealth.

Session 1 — Assessment and goal setting. We measure baseline processing performance and set one to three goals tied to real tasks that matter to you.

Session 2 — Pacing strategies, including chunking information and confidently requesting repetition or clarification.

Session 3 — Simplifying complexity, breaking multi-step information into manageable parts with written or visual backup.

Session 4 — Environmental management for busy or fast-paced settings, such as meetings, family gatherings or shopping.

Session 5 — Real-world application, practising strategies in a genuinely fast-paced setting relevant to your goals.

Session 6 — Review and maintenance planning, with outcome re-assessment and a written strategy summary to keep.
