Fine Motor & Functional Grasp Course
Onward Health's Fine Motor & Functional Grasp Course is a structured, 6-session program applying arm and hand function to real daily tasks following stroke, brain injury or spinal cord injury.
This is the final stage of upper limb recovery for many clients, taking strength and movement control that's already been built and applying it to dexterity, grasp and the specific tasks of daily life. This course is best suited to clients who have adequate strength and movement control and are ready to focus on functional application.
Who we support
We commonly work with adults following:
Stroke (hemiparesis)
Acquired Brain Injury
Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury with upper limb involvement
This course is best suited to clients who have completed strength and motor control work or who already have adequate strength and are working specifically on dexterity and functional use. It is delivered one-on-one and tailored to the individual's presentation and environment.
The Fine Motor & Functional Grasp Course may help with:
Difficulty with grasp patterns (power, precision, or pinch grip)
Reduced dexterity for fine tasks
Difficulty integrating the arm and hand into daily activities
Reduced confidence using the affected hand functionally
Return to specific tasks such as dressing, cooking, work, or hobbies
What This Course Addresses
Assessment & Intervention Approach
The course runs over six sessions (45–60 minutes), delivered in person to allow for hands-on assessment and facilitation.
Session 1 — Assessment and goal setting. We measure baseline dexterity and functional grasp and set goals tied to the specific tasks you want to return to.
Session 2 — Grasp training including power, precision and lateral pinch as relevant to your goals.
Session 3 — Dexterity tasks graded to your current ability, building towards functional complexity.
Session 4 — Integration into simple daily activities, applying grasp and dexterity gains to real tasks.
Session 5 — Real-world application on your actual goal tasks such as dressing, cooking, work-specific tasks or leisure activities such as fishing.
Session 6 — Review and maintenance planning, with outcome re-assessment and a written home program to keep.
