Executive Function Course

Onward Health's Executive Function Course is a structured, 6-session program supporting adults to rebuild planning, initiation and problem-solving skills following neurological injury or illness.

Executive function changes - difficulty planning, starting tasks or working through the unexpected are common after brain injury or stroke, particularly with frontal-lobe presentations. These changes can affect work, household management and independence, even when physical recovery has progressed well. This course builds practical frameworks for planning and follow-through, applied directly to real, client-nominated tasks.

Who we support

We commonly work with adults following:

  • Stroke

  • Acquired Brain Injury

  • Traumatic Brain Injury

  • Neurological conditions

  • Post-concussion presentations

  • Cognitive decline impacting daily function

This course is delivered one-on-one and tailored to the individual's presentation, goals and environment.

The Attention & Focus Course may help with:

  • Difficulty planning or organising multi-step tasks

  • Trouble starting tasks despite knowing what needs to be done

  • Difficulty adapting when something unexpected happens

  • Reduced follow-through on household, work, or personal tasks

  • Reduced confidence managing complex or open-ended activities

What This Course Addresses

Assessment & Intervention Approach

Course Structure

The course runs over six sessions (45–60 minutes), delivered in person or via telehealth.

Session 1 — Assessment and goal setting. We measure baseline executive function performance and set one to three goals tied to real tasks that matter to you.

Session 2 — Planning frameworks, including the goal-plan-do-check cycle and breaking tasks into manageable steps.

Session 3 — Initiation strategies such as cueing, task chunking and environmental triggers to help you get started.

Session 4 — Problem-solving, using a structured approach for working through unexpected obstacles.

Session 5 — Real-world application, practising strategies on a live, client-nominated multi-step task such as meal preparation, a work project or a community task.

Session 6 — Review and maintenance planning, with outcome re-assessment and a written strategy summary to keep.

The course aims to improve:

  • Independent management of appointments, medications, and routines

  • Confidence in a personal memory system

  • Reduced reliance on family or support workers

  • Consistency in daily habits and routines

  • Reduced stress associated with forgetting

Progress is measured at the start and end of the course using standardised and goal-based outcome measures, giving a clear picture of change.
